- Project Details
- Turner Bros was engaged from the early design stages of the Cutaway Sydney project to develop and deliver a shading solution for a series of skylight windows positioned approximately 18 metres above floor level. What began as a project that sat within the parameters of a standard shading system evolved into a far more complex technical challenge. As the design progressed, the skylights increased in size, extending beyond the limitations of conventional systems and requiring a fully customised solution.
Working closely with the project team throughout the design development process, Turner Bros engineered a bespoke shading system designed specifically to accommodate the final skylight configuration while meeting both performance and aesthetic requirements. As part of the project's evolution, the controls strategy was also upgraded to an SMI automation system, allowing for more efficient communication and reducing the need for extensive cabling.
Installation works were required 18 metres above the floor in a difficult-to-access environment, with the skylights located above existing sandstone structures. Our team developed a safe and practical installation methodology that enabled access to these hard to reach areas while maintaining project timeframes and safety requirements.
Adding further complexity, the shading systems needed to be installed, commissioned and fully operational before the installation of the project's feature tree branch structures.
Completed in April 2026, the shading systems continue to perform as intended, providing effective light control while integrating seamlessly within the architecture.
